One Per Desk - The One Per Desk, or OPD, was an innovative hybrid personal computer/telecommunications terminal based on the hardware of the Sinclair QL. The One Per Desk was built by International Computers Ltd (ICL) and launched in the UK in 1984.
Computer hardware - Computer hardware is the physical parts of a computer, as distinguished from the computer software or computer programs and data that operate within the hardware. The hardware of a computer is infrequently changed, in comparison with software and data which are "soft" in the sense that they are readily created, modified or erased on the computer.
Computer desk - A Computer desk is any modern desk form built specifically to support or contain a computer and/or its components and to facilitate work on it by a user or users.
White box (computer hardware) - In computer hardware, a white box is a personal computer assembled from off-the-shelf parts which can be purchased separately at retail. With standardization of form factors and connectors, a whole range of cases, motherboards, CPUs, hard disk drives, RAM and other parts can be obtained individually at many computer shops and assembled at home with a minimum of tools and technical skill.

.. systems virtual they paper microprogram, CPUs the types of instructions they supported, and few machines could be considered "general purpose". Just getting a CPU to work was a substantial governmental and technical event. The most widely installed computer was the IBM 650, which used drum memory onto which programs were loaded using either paper tape... CPU design was originally an ad-hoc process. History of General Purpose CPUs 1950s: Early Designs Computers throughout the early 1950s were similar in that they all contained a central processor that was unique to that machine. Key design innovations include cache, virtual memory, instruction pipelining, superscalar, CISC, RISC, virtual machine, emulators, microprogram, and stack. Programs written for one machine would not run on another, and most often wouldn't run on other machines from the same company. The modern (ie, 1965 to 1985) way to design control logic is to write a microprogram. There simply wasn't enough space to wire in a full set of instructions using the technology of the day (for instance the SAGE systems filled entire floors) so each machine targeted a certain solution. Each design differed in the types of instructions using the technology of the 1950s commercial builders had developed factory-constructed, truck-deliverable computers.
